Saludos desde Chile (Greetings from Chile).
It’s been awhile since we’ve updated you, our prayer partners. As you can imagine, it’s been a busy, but blessed, time for us here in Chile.
As you already know, Sophia had a pelvic osteotomy on her left hip June 2nd in Santiago, Chile. Her cast was removed on July 1st, and she began walking again on July 18th. Her doctor has assured us that in about six weeks, she will be walking normally (meaning without a limp). When she got her cast off, her doctor declared that the surgery had been successful! How we praise the Lord for that news! In the months leading up to her surgery, we were told that, while her left hip needed surgical correction, her right hip was not perfect but it was not a candidate for surgery. Unfortunately, after reviewing the x-ray when she got her cast off, we were told that her right hip still was not a candidate for surgery but that it had not changed since before the surgery. While that is good news (meaning one of the surgery’s complications of making the right side worse did not happen), it also is bad news in that it had not developed in the last month. The doctor is now watching the right side very closely as her hip socket is still very shallow. Her most recent x-ray (taken at the end of July) showed that her left hip has excellent correction and her right hip is not getting worse. Please pray with us that her right hip will develop as it should and that surgical intervention will not be necessary. Please continue to pray for Sophia’s complete recovery. She will be followed closely in the upcoming months and will need to have pin removal surgery in late November/early December.
We had the blessing of hosting two volunteer teams over the past few months. The University of Mobile brought a team of 7 to work with us at the end of May. We had the privilege to minister to the children in one of the schools here in Vallenar, as well as host a Vacation Bible School for the children in a strategic neighborhood. The team radiated Jesus’ love to all they encountered. In July, we hosted a youth team of 9 members from First Baptist Church – Houston to do some light construction projects. These boys worked hard the week that they were here. They were able to build a storage shed for the First Baptist Church – Vallenar as well as paint the inside of the church. What a blessing they were to the small congregation!
Bryan has begun prayer-walking and visitation in the very small village of Buena Esperanza. He has a few women that have interest in studying the Bible, so they have begun a small adult Bible study in the home of Maria. On Wednesdays, we are in the school there (K-6, about 30 students total) teaching the Bible through stories, crafts, music, and games. Please pray for hearts to be receptive to His love as we point the adults and children to Him.
We are excited to welcome E. C. and Connie Andy to Vallenar in mid-August! They are a Master’s missionary couple with the IMB and are from Pataskala, Ohio. Yes, that’s right…….our home church, Jersey Baptist Church, is located in Pataskala, Ohio. We know them from our home church, and they came on a volunteer mission trip here to Vallenar in May 2008. Isn’t God amazing? They will be in Vallenar helping to spread the Good News through the Huasco valley for the next two years, Lord willing. Pray for them as they adjust to Chilean Spanish (they’ve been in Costa Rica learning Spanish) and to Chilean culture.
As always, we are extremely appreciative of your prayers and continued support!
Serving Him,
Bryan, Deana, Hannah, Molly, Samuel, Lilly Beth, and Sophia
