Fall Semester (Aug 15 - Dec 15, 2009)

Hands On Projects are:

  1. A new pathway for service for college student and young adult volunteers
  2. Hands On Projects can last from 4 months.  Students will come to serve in the SAM Region during the Spring or Fall semester.
  3. For students and/or young adults who have completed their freshman year and are 18-29 that are single or married without children
  4. Missions mentoring experiences for students
  5. Students will work in teams of two or more (minimum team make-up: 2 male; 2 female; 2 female 1 male or 2 male 1 female)
  6. Scheduled to begin in mid-January of 2009 in the SAM Region (South America)
  7. Students will go through a 2-week orientation/training upon arrival to the field before going out to their respective assignments.  They will also receive a 4-day debriefing at the end of their term of service.

Hands On Projects have:

  1. One application process to be hosted by Student Mobilization on The Task Hands On website.
  2. One standardized online application with four references
  3. An increased standard insurance level (Adams and Associates) to account for the length of time of these projects (think higher coverage than current student applicants)

The students will:

  1. Pay RVA Student Mobilization one set cost of $2600. This will cover the cost of their round trip air ticket from the US to the field, the cost of their visa, and the cost of their insurance. All of this can be acquired through National Travel Systems, the agent we are using. Student Mobilization and NTS will secure “m” fare tickets allowing students to make changes on return dates. This will allow field and student the option of extending the service time at no cost to the student.
  2. Pay for and acquire immunizations and passport
  3. Face the possibility of having to reimburse RVA/field if they leave without completing assignment
  4. Provide timely reports of their work to field mentor
  5. Meet on a regular basis with their field mentor

The field mentor will:

  1. Provide a written strategy of how the Hands On Students will be working
  2. Arrange for housing with a Baptist Partner, national family or local accommodations
  3. Provide a complete orientation/training upon arrival to the field of service
  4. Meet on a regular basis with the Hands On Student Teams.  We suggest once a week the first month and than at least once a month throughout the assignment.
